After last weeks International Women's day, we have found a report by Amnesty International that highlights some facts that you might not know about sexual and reproductive rights in other parts of the world. Here we look at Iran as two laws are proposed which could restrict women's access to contraception and work unless they have a child.
Its current population is 78.5 million
It's authorities want to increase that number to 150-200 million
However it's birthrate is declining. In 1980 there were 7 births per woman, in 1988 there were 5.5, 2.8 in 1996 and 1.85 in 2004.
All sexual and reproductive health family planning funding was cut in 2012.
The top three most used contraceptives by married women in Iran (age 15-49) are: 15.05% oral contraceptives, 14.15% voluntary sterilization and 13.77% condoms.
The change in % of women using contraception in Iran reportedly rose from 37%-79% between 1976 and 2010
In 2008, 21.6 million unsafe abortions took place around the world and caused 47,000 deaths and 5 million disabilities.
According to the UN, 215,000 maternal deaths could be avoided by using contraception.
17% of women in Iran (age 15-64) work or are trying to.
Restrictions on female employment opportunities mean that the number of women employed has fallen by 100,000 over the last 8 years.
The female unemployment rate is 16.8%, whilst the male is almost half at 9.1%.
41,226 marriages were girls between the ages of 10 and 14 in 2013-2014, and 201 girls recoreded marriages were girls under the age of 10 in Iran, where forced marriage is common.
Police in Iran cautioned more than 2.9 million women between March 2013 and March 2014 for failing to observe Islamic dress code. Whilst another 207,053 women were forced to sign a statement promising not to re-commit the “improper veiling” (bad-hijabi) offence. 18,081 women were sent as far as court to be prosecuted and punished.
